Welcome to the Cosa Excavations website. Cosa continues to occupy a primary place in Italian archaeology. It is a small site with an impressive record of research and publication that began more than seventy years ago under the leadership of Frank E. Brown of the American Academy in Rome. We continue this extraordinary legacy and document life at this remarkable site through excavations, geo-physical survey, geo-archaeological analyses, and study of legacy data. Ex Italia necnon et Cosa semper aliquid novi.

History

For many years the flagship of American archaeology in Italy, Cosa boasts a remarkable history that spans more than 1,300 years. Founded on the eve of the first Punic war, it was partially abandoned sometime around 70 BCE and then substantially rebuilt under Augustus.
